From the plan you receive to the file on the machine

Not a reference work that lists everything, but the path you walk — in the order you walk it. With screenshots from the program itself.

Installing

The program installs like any other Windows program. One thing stands out: Windows does not know us yet, and it says so.

  1. 1Download the installer from the download page.
  2. 2Double-click it. Windows shows “Windows protected your PC” — click More info and then Run anyway.
  3. 3The program appears in your start menu and updates itself from then on.
  4. 4On first start you get fourteen days of trial, without having to ask for anything.

Note. That Windows warning goes away once the installer is signed. That is a certificate we are arranging; it changes nothing about the program itself.

Loading a file

Drag your file onto the window. The program looks at what is in it and sorts it into three bins: surface, lines and points.

  1. 1Drag one or more files onto the screen, or use File → Open.
  2. 2Next to each bin it says what is in it: the number of triangles, lines and points.
  3. 3Several files together is fine: a design from LandXML and the linework from a DXF land in the same drawing.
  4. 4Whatever you do not want to take along, untick — then it does not travel to the machine either.

Note. If the program does not recognise a file, it says why instead of silently doing nothing.

Checking in 3D

Before anything is written, you look at it. Orbit, tilt, contours on top, and the aerial photo underneath to see whether it sits in the right place.

  1. 1Drag with the mouse to orbit, scroll to zoom in and out.
  2. 2Colour scale, contours, aerial imagery, flat view and transparency are in the bar above the drawing.
  3. 3Focus takes you back to the whole model when you have lost your way.
  4. 4The layer buttons on the left let you look at one kind of linework on its own.

Note. This is the moment to see whether it is right. A wrong elevation costs you a minute here; on site it costs a day.

The coordinate system

Before converting, set which system you come from and which you go to. Heights come along — a conversion that only handles the plan puts your site half a metre too high.

  1. 1Pick the source system: Lambert 2008 or Lambert 72 (BE), RD/NAP (NL), LUREF (LU), and for France Lambert-93, the nine CC zones or the older Lambert zones.
  2. 2Pick the target system. If they are the same, nothing is recomputed.
  3. 3Going to latitude and longitude (WGS84, for GPX or KML)? The program sets eight decimals by itself.
  4. 4In doubt? Switch on the aerial photo: if the plan sits in the right place, your system is right.

Writing to the machine

Pick the brand and the program writes the file that controller expects. Want all seven at once? That is one tick.

  1. 1Tick the brand: Trimble, Topcon, Leica, Unicontrol, CHCnav, or the terrain model for the field computer.
  2. 2Under each tile it says which file comes out — .dsz, .tp3, .svl or LandXML.
  3. 3Tick “all brands at once” and every brand gets its own file, each in its own folder.
  4. 4At the bottom you see, before you click, which files will come out, with name and date.

Every brand in its own folder, same name and date. Not one file that looks like another.

Note. Writing that file happens on mv3d.be, not on your own PC — so you need a connection for that. Reading, checking and drawing stay local.

Point lists

Setting-out points go out in your instrument’s format. Column order, separator and decimal mark are yours to set, with an example line that shows exactly what goes into the file.

  1. 1Open the points bin: filter by name or code, tick what travels.
  2. 2Put the columns in the order your instrument expects — name, X, Y, Z, code.
  3. 3Choose the separator (comma, semicolon, tab or space) and the decimal mark.
  4. 4Choose the format: CSV, TXT, GSI for Leica, DXF, LandXML, GPX or KML.

Note. A list with the columns swapped is not a small mistake: the instrument then reads the height as a code. Check the example line before you write.

Linework and breaklines

If the linework sits in a separate file next to your design, the program finds it. Only have a terrain model? It can derive the breaklines from it.

  1. 1Load the design; if a DXF with linework sits next to it, “lines from DXF” appears.
  2. 2Only a surface? Click Derive at the lines bin — the program looks for the kinks in the ground.
  3. 3The threshold decides from which kink a line is drawn; slide it until it matches what you see.
  4. 4Every layer keeps its own colour, so you can see which line is the kerb and which the slope.

Why an arc can swing the wrong way

In a DXF an arc is not an arc but a straight line with a bulge. Picking the wrong direction of rotation when converting gives you the mirrored arc — and in a list of coordinates that looks perfectly normal.

A whole folder at once

Got a folder full of files from a site? No need to open them one by one. The program reads them all and says what is in each.

  1. 1Choose Tools → Walk through folder and point at the folder.
  2. 2Each file gets a line: the number of points, lines and triangles.
  3. 3Whatever cannot be read is listed with the reason — so you know straight away which file is broken.
  4. 4From there you open the file you need.

Tablets, machines and field controllers

A site no longer has to travel on a stick. Pair the device once, then tick it and press send.

  1. 1Open the MV3D app on the tablet in the cab, or MV3D Veld on the field controller. As long as the device is not paired, an eight-digit code is shown on its screen.
  2. 2Type that code under Machines → Add device. You first see which device it is; after Pair, brand, model and software are already right.
  3. 3If you created the device from the office already, the other way round works too: the app asks for a code that you pass on to it.
  4. 4Mark per device whether it is yours, rented, or from a subcontractor. For a rental, add the hire company and the end date.
  5. 5What sits on your devices appears on the projects page next to your own projects: open, rename, or delete — the last one only after you have retyped the name.

Note. If a machine is switched off, your request stays until it makes contact again. It does not expire, so you do not have to ask twice.

Trial and licence

For the first fourteen days everything runs without you having to do anything. After that the program asks for a key.

  1. 1At every start you see how many days are left; after that it stays in the bar.
  2. 2You enter a key on the lock screen, or through the corner in the bar.
  3. 3One key belongs to one PC. Working at the office and on a laptop? Ask — we will sort that out.
  4. 4Without a connection the program keeps working for three days; after that it needs to go online briefly.
  5. 5Click your company name at the top right: there you find your licence, how long it runs, your key to copy, and the button to check for a new version.

Note. At the bottom of the lock screen is your machine id. Pass it on when you ask for help — then we know which PC it is about.

When something goes wrong

A file that will not open or a machine that refuses it: let us know with the file attached and we will look with you.

  1. 1Press Support at the top of the window: there you ask a question, report a problem or send a suggestion.
  2. 2That becomes a ticket in your customer portal. Your version, your system and the screen you were on travel along if you tick the box — so we no longer have to ask for them.
  3. 3Or send a message through the support page; that gives the same ticket.
  4. 4Say which brand and controller it concerns, and what exactly happened.
  5. 5If there is a file behind it that will not open, send it along — that saves a day of back and forth.
